Macon County District 8 Commissioner Bobby Ray King had some questions at Monday鈥檚 commission meeting for Macon County Mayor Steve Jones and Macon County SchoolS Director Shawn Carter.
鈥淥n the fact of having school on Saturday May 24, did the teachers get paid?鈥 asked King.
鈥淵es sir,鈥 replied Carter.
鈥淒id the school bus drivers get paid?鈥 asked King.
鈥淵es sir,鈥 replied Carter.
鈥淎nd they (busses) didn鈥檛 even run. You said at a previous meeting that the buses were going to run so some kids could have breakfast and lunch and get their report cards. How did they do those things if the busses didn鈥檛 run,鈥 asked King.
鈥淏ecause report cards are online now,鈥 replied Carter.
King interjected and Carter said, 鈥淐an I finish, you asked me a question and I鈥檓 trying to give you answers. Any student that doesn鈥檛 have access to our online portal can request a paper copy and have it sent home.鈥
King asked, 鈥淲ell, how could they get to school if the buses didn鈥檛 run?鈥
鈥淭hey could still come to school if they wanted to,鈥 replied Carter. 鈥淲e didn鈥檛 run the buses for those two hours.鈥
鈥淵ou ran the buses the previous Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday so kids could eat breakfast and lunch. They鈥檇 be hungry on Saturday too, wouldn鈥檛 they,鈥 asked King.
鈥淲e didn鈥檛 cook on Saturday,鈥 replied Carter. 鈥淭he cafeteria staff did not work that day.鈥
King then turned to Macon County District 7 Commissioner Jeff Hughes, who also drives a school bus for Macon County schools.
鈥淒id you get paid for Saturday?鈥 asked King.
鈥淭hey said I did, I don鈥檛 know,鈥 replied Hughes.
鈥淭he buses didn鈥檛 run, but the drivers got paid; you tell me why,鈥 King said to Carter.
鈥淲e have never in my time working for the school board, ran buses on Saturday,鈥 replied Carter. We don鈥檛 run buses on the first day either. For the amount of kids that come on the three two hour days it wouldn鈥檛 be cost effective for the fuel that would be used on those days.鈥
鈥淲ell, it鈥檚 still money being spent,鈥 said King.
鈥淚t could have been more,鈥 replied Carter.
When it came time for public comment, Commissioner King once again had questions, this time for the county mayor.
鈥淚鈥檝e asked you to put the moratorium (on impact fees) on the agenda for the last couple months now, and it hasn鈥檛 been put on there,鈥 said King.
鈥淚 forgot to do that,鈥 replied Jones. 鈥淚 do apologize for that. We will get that on the next meeting. I will tell you though, this moratorium, what you are talking about, you have to remember that the impact fees bring in over a million dollars. You make a moratorium for that you will have to raise taxes to make up for the loss of those fees.鈥
