A once-stray black Labrador retriever is on his way to becoming a vital member of a Virginia law enforcement team thanks to a collaboration between Wilson County Animal Control (WCAC) and the Bedford County, Virginia Sheriff鈥檚 Office.
The 2-year-old lab, named Stetson by WCAC staff, was found earlier this year near the Wilson-Davidson County line. After a standard five-day hold period passed with no one coming forward to claim him, WCAC staff began evaluating Stetson for adoption. It was during this process that WCAC Director Steve Gatlin, a former sheriff鈥檚 deputy, recognized the dog鈥檚 exceptional qualities.
鈥淪tetson showed a strong play drive, remarkable focus, and was healthy, strong and well-socialized,鈥 said Gatlin. 鈥淚 could see he had the potential to serve in law enforcement.鈥
Following internal evaluations, WCAC began contacting law enforcement agencies to see if there was interest in placing Stetson in a working role. In May, the Bedford County Sheriff鈥檚 Office in Virginia reached out, expressing interest in enrolling Stetson into training as part of a new program.
Capt. Shannon Zimmerman of the Bedford County Sheriff鈥檚 Office confirmed that Stetson will undergo a comprehensive training program over the next couple of months. During this time, a handler will also be selected to partner with him. Upon completion, Stetson and his handler will be assigned to the Bedford County Schools, where he will serve as both a drug detection K-9 and a goodwill ambassador.
鈥淭his program is close to my heart,鈥 Gatlin said. 鈥淣ot only does Stetson get a new purpose and a forever home, but Bedford County gains a dedicated partner to help protect their schools.鈥
Wilson County Animal Control has many more dogs currently available for adoption and encourages the public to consider giving a shelter pet a second chance. Listings can be found on .
WCAC is also actively seeking volunteers. To learn more about adopting or volunteering, contact Wilson County Animal Control at 615-444-9775.
