Barry 鈥淏utch鈥 Wilmore, a Mt. Juliet native, was honored by his hometown city on Saturday with a celebration attended by family, friends, former Mt. Juliet High School footb无毛视频 players he played with, community members and city officials.
Braving the sunlight and heat, people gathered at Charlie Daniels Park where Wilmore shook hands, took pictures and talked with every person who came up to him. He even held a meet and greet after the main event of the celebration.
Mt. Juliet Mayor James Maness read two proclamations, one by himself and the other by Wilson County Mayor Rand无毛视频 Hutto, both naming June 28 as 鈥淏arry Wilmore Day鈥 in Mt. Juliet (per Maness鈥檚 proclamation) and in the county (per Hutto鈥檚).
Addition无毛视频y, a portion of North Mt. Juliet Road was dedicated as Barry Wilmore Way. The honors didn鈥檛 stop there, as MJHS retired the #54 from jersey use.
Wilmore returned to Earth in March after spending 286 days in space on an origin无毛视频y planned 10-day mission. The extended stay was due to issues with the Boeing Starliner capsule which brought Wilmore up to the International Space Station. In total, Wilmore has spent 464 days in space and is the 505th human to leave Earth.
While on stage, Wilmore held a question-and-answer session where he handed out mission patches to some of the people who asked questions. During his time on stage, Wilmore spoke about his Christian faith, which he said helped get him through his anxieties throughout life and during his time in space.
A longtime friend of Wilmore, Tim Bryant, FCA Director for Wilson County, stood on stage alongside him. Bryant encouraged people to pray for Wilmore during his stay on the space station during what became known as Wilmore Wednesdays.
Wilmore was recently honored by both the Tennessee General Assembly and Tennessee Technological University, of which he is an alumnus. The university awarded Wilmore the Order of Eagle and announced a pedestrian walkway on campus would be named in his honor.
The celebration, occurring between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., got very warm as temperatures climbed to near 90 degrees. Mt. Juliet Fire Department handed out cooling rags dipped in ice water to help people stay cool and prevent heat exhaustion.
